Studies

– 1986 Graduated at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna, (340/360),

– 1989 graduated in Modern Literature at the University of Bologna, (110/110 cum laude)

– 1995 specialized in History of Art at the University of Bologna, (70/70 cum laude)

1996 – 2000 Founder artistic Director of Tusciaelecta, International site-specific biennial project in the castles and the villages of Chianti, between Firenze and Siena. Some of the participants: Jannis Kounellis, Joseph Kosuth, Jan Dibbets, Joe Tilson, Pietro Consagra, Mario Merz, Sandro Chia, Studio Azzurro, Maurizio Nannucci, Karel Appel, Stefano Arienti, Christian Boltanski, Bill Viola, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Max Neuhaus, Mario Merz, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Antoni Abad, Tung-lu Hung, Grazia Toderi, Bill Viola, etc.

2001 refreshing_ (together with Pier Luigi Tazzi), collateral project of the 49° Venice Biennale, inside the Arsenale (invited artists: Massimo Bartolini, Cai Guo-Qiang, Olafur Eliasson, Tobias Rehberger, Rirkrit Tiravanija)

2001-2008 Director of the Galleria Civica d’Arte Contemporanea in Trento.

Among the most important exhibitions and special projects he collaborated with: Cai Guo-Qiang, Nicola De Maria, Kendell Geers, Katarzyna Kozyra, Mario Merz, Sislej Xhafa, RirkritTiravanija, Maurizio Cattelan, Santiago Sierra, Aernout Mik, Gillian Wearing, Joan Jonas, Wilhelm Sasnal, Paul McCarthy, Allora & Calzadilla, Carlos Amorales, Assume Vivid Astro Focus, John Bock, Cezary Bodzianowski, Olaf Breuning, Chrisoph Buchel, Claude Closky, Minerva Cuevas, Roberto Cuoghi, Jimmie Durham, Joseph Kosuth, Yayoi Kusama, Jim Lambie, Anibal Lopez, Jonathan Meese, Gian Marco Montesano, Gianni Motti, My Barbarian, Roman Ondak, Cesare Pietroiusti, William Pope.L, Marinella Senatore, Monika Sosnowska, Pascal Marthine Tayou and others.

2005 – 2008 Founder of the International Prize for Performance. In the four editions he

managed, the International Jury was composed by some of the most important experts of performing art, like Marina Abramovic, Valie Export, Renato Barilli, Helena Kontova. The prize launched some of the now most interesting young performing artists like Nico Vascellari, Cinthia Marcelle, Sedzia Glowy, Michael Fliri.

2006 – 2008 Coordinator of Manifesta 7, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art that took place in 2008 in Trentino – Alto Adige, in five venues of four different towns (Rovereto, Trento, Bolzano/Bozen, Fortezza/Franzenfeste), involving more than 180 artists from all around the world.

2006 – 2011 Member of the Board of the International Foundation Manifesta

2010 Artistic director of the XIV International Sculpture Biennale of Carrara. With the title POSTMONUMENT, the biennale analyzed the need for monuments in today’s society through the work of renowned artists and architects as Carl Andre, Huma Bhabha, Cai Guo-Qiang, Maurizio Cattelan, Urs Fischer, Yona Friedman, Frank O. Gehry, Antony Gormley, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Paul McCarthy, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Gillian Wearing, and young artists as Giorgio Andreotta Calò, Rossella Biscotti, Marcelo Cidade.

2010 – 2014 Director of the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw.

2014 – 2017: Director of the Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art, Prato.

2018 – 2019: Chief curator of the Shenzhen and Hong Kong Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism.
