A new exciting Korean adaptation of Pirandello’s masterpiece “Six Characters in Search of an Author” created by young artists of the Seoul Institute of the Arts
will be performed at the Namsan Art Center in Seoul
on Saturday June 9th (3:00pm and 7:00pm) and Sunday 10th (1:30pm and 5:00pm)
Six Characters in Search of an Author (1921) can be counted among the most important plays of all time, one of the greatest Italian classics of the twentieth century. A work that has renewed the theater by anticipating the times, breaking the scheme of naturalistic fiction. Translated in many languages, this play has fascinates and at the same time shocked the audience all over the world for almost a century, intertwining the dark accents of a bourgeois family drama with innovative metateatrical intuitions, and bringing on stage the eternal theme of the conflict between reality and fiction. It is certainly the most known play by Luigi Pirandello, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934.
Six Characters in Search of an Author is now being presented in a brand new original adaptation in Korean language, created by a group of over 40 young artists – among actors, musicians, directors, designers and staff – under the guidance of the Italian director Andrea Paciotto and the Korean director Hwang Dong Geun, both professors in the Department of Theater of the Seoul Institute of the Arts. The staging involves the use of live music, video projections and an imaginative design. It attentive and respectful towards the author, but distant from the heavy conventions of traditional stagings, in the attempt to find a more contemporary and original interpretative approach.
This project is produced by the Seoul Institute of the Arts and supported by the Italian Cultural Institute in Korea and it continues the collaboration between the two institutions, initiated last year in the occasion of the 150 anniversary from the birth of Pirandello.
